Well Chlorinations

Jelinek Well Drilling offers well chlorination services for the treatment of iron bacteria and to disinfect your well.

Iron bacteria are a natural part of the environment in Wisconsin and most other parts of the world. These microorganisms combine dissolved iron or manganese with oxygen and use it to form rust-colored deposits. In the process, the bacteria produce a brown slime that builds up on well screens, pipes, and plumbing fixtures.

There are certain indications that your well may have an iron bacteria problem. These are:
  • Red, yellow, or orange color to the water
  • Slime on the inner walls of the toilet tank
  • A smell that may resemble fuel oil, cucumber, or sewage.
    • (This smell may be noticeable only in the morning or after other periods of non-use. If a disinfectant is used in the toilet tank, this sign of iron bacteria might not be apparent.)
For owners of wells with iron bacteria infestation, chlorination is the best way to treat it and prevent it from reoccurring. We use 210 gallons of chlorinated water to disinfect your well and the pipes and fixtures inside your home. After this procedure, the homeowner needs to refrain from using water for 24 to 48 hours. (Many people choose to chlorinate their well and home when they will be away for a day or two to eliminate any inconvenience.) The homeowner then simply flushes out the system themselves.
